PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education)

PSHE at Nine Acres Primary School

Our PSHE Intent

We want our children to grow up and build safe, healthy relationships and be able to articulate their own opinions through thoughtful debates while showing respect and tolerance. At Nine Acres, they will build the skills they need to look after their physical and mental self in order to positively influence the world around them.

Why?

There's a proven link between pupils' health and wellbeing, and their academic progress. Crucial skills and positive attitudes developed through comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) are critical to ensuring children are effective learners. Staff at Nine Acres recognise how important these skills and attitudes are in unlocking pupils' potential, helping to raise achievement and closing the gap in educational attainment.

Our Curriculum

At Nine Acres, we offer an ambitious and high quality PSHE curriculum. We believe the skills taught in these lessons link greatly to our values as a school alongside the 5 British Values. We want our children to grow up and build safe, healthy relationships and be able to articulate their own opinions through thoughtful debates while showing respect and tolerance. At Nine Acres, they will build the skills they need to look after their physical and mental self in order to positively influence the world around them. We are also passionate for our children to learn real life skills around careers, aspiration, finance and economy and children are given the opportunity to think about how their learning now can support them in their future.

Every year group has weekly PSHE lessons. We use SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship) to support our resources and planning. Our curriculum meets the statutory requirements of Relationships, Health and Sex Education and has been carefully planned to ensure it is progressive and meets the needs of the Nine Acres children. Some of our key themes are:

  • Healthy relationships
  • Valuing difference
  • Keeping myself safe
  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Growing and changing
  • Feelings and emotions
  • Being my best

Within our PSHE lessons, children are able to make links to our school values alongside the five British Values. We feel this is an important part of being a British citizen and an important skill to recognise these values in their lives.

We are also passionate for our children to learn real life skills around careers and aspiration and finance and economy. Living on a small island, we want our children to explore the wider world and what it can offer.
